North West Africa (NWA) 869 Stone Meteorite Churned Into Perfect Sphere
The Sahara Desert, near the Moroccan/Algerian Border
Similar to the previous lot, this sphere originated from a stone meteorite purchased in Morocco. The mass of the specimen prior to preparation is approximately three times the mass of this sphere given the tremendous loss of material due to grinding and polishing. Only when the needs of research institutions are addressed, does the luxury exist to create the compelling presentation of a sphere, and such is the case with NWA 869, a common stone meteorite with metalflake inclusions throughout. This specimen was part of a tremendous meteorite shower which resulted in more than one ton of recovered material. While NWA 869 is relatively common, as indicated in the introduction to this auction, the cumulative weight of every known meteorite is still less than the worlds annual output of gold.
