Sheng Shanshan was born in Shanghai. She graduated from the Fine Art Department of Shanghai College of Drama in 1981. In 1982, she went to the United States to pursue her academic and artistic interests by attending Mount Holyoke College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she earned her Master of Fine Arts Degree. Later she went to Harvard University as an artist-in-residence for two years. She now lives and works in San Francisco. In her 20 years as a professional artist, she has spent the last 12 years working in the public art field. She has completed large-scale projects in California, Arizona, Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, Chicago, Shaghai, Beijing, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Sheng has held over thirty one-woman shows in Europe, Asia and America. In 1989, she was awarded the official artist for the Asian Art Festival in Chicago and she was selected as one of a hundred distinguish career women for the city of Chicago. Her works appear in selected public collections around the world including Harvard University, China National Art Museum, Beijing; Art Museum of South Texas; Berengo Collection, Venice, Italy; and the Shanghai Art Museum.
