Footnotes

  • This bowl forms part of a series of rather unusual incised bowls carved in a characteristic late Ming fluid and jagged style with dragons and cloud scrolls reserved on a coloured background. The proportion of the bowls is itself unusual, since they are unusually deep, giving a good opportunity for the decorator to carve a wide well-spaced design. The colour of the background and the dragon are always significantly different to provide a sharp contrast, the translucent glazes ranging from aubergine, pale and spinach green to a thin primrose yellow.
