Footnotes

  • This bowl forms part of a series of rather unusual incised bowls carved in a characteristic late Ming fluid and jagged style with dragons and cloud scrolls reserved on a coloured background. The proportion of the bowls is itself unusual, since they are unusually deep, giving a good opportunity for the decorator to carve a wide well-spaced design. The colour of the background and the dragon are always significantly different to provide a sharp contrast, the translucent glazes ranging from aubergine, pale and spinach green to a thin primrose yellow.

For a similarly enamelled example from the Duberly Collection, see A.du Boulay, Chinese Porcelain, pl.43; for others with different ground colours, see R.L.Hobson et al, Chinese Ceramics in Private Collections, col.pl.15; for another, see J.Ayers, The Baur Collection: Chinese Ceramics, Vol.II, no.A.204; for another, see Ming and Qing Porcelain from the Collection of the T.Y.Chao Family Foundation, Hong Kong, 1978, pl.35; for another in the Percival David Foundation, see M.Medley, Catalogue of Ming Polychrome Wares, no.93; for another, see J.Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, no.11:144; and for another, see Christie's, The Jingguantang Collection, 3 November 1996, lot 573.

An example with a yellow dragon on an aubergine ground, now in the C.P. Lin collection is illustrated in Elegant Form and Harmonious Decorations, London, 1992, no. 100; while an aubergine enamelled bowl is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, catalogue no. 539.
