Lot Details
Gibeon Meteorite on Sculptural Bronze Stand
Iron, Fine Octahedrite
Great Nama Land, Namibia, Africa
Sculpted Stand by Lawrence Stoller

Astonishing aesthetic form – including a breathtaking deep scoop and innumerable regmaglypts, or thumb prints – only tells part of the story of this superlative Gibeon specimen. Its shard-like shape manifests the violence with which the famous meteorite slammed through Earth’s atmosphere, the intensity of its explosion twisting and crushing the molten metal of the outer space invader as it rained down on to the 230 x 70 mile strewn field in Africa. Its exquisite natural patina evidences its life on Earth for thousands of years as an object of wonder by Namibian natives, who fashioned recovered specimens into spear-points and other tools, yet fearfully left behind oddly shaped pieces such as this. Adding to the aesthetic presentation of this prize specimen is a base by lapidary artist, Lawrence Stoller, who has created a sculptural patinated bronze base, the design of which augments the beauty of the meteorite and is artfully integrated into the life of the specimen. See lot 1280 for biography of Lawrence Stoller. Specimen measures 12 ½ x 8 ½ x 4 ½in; Height measures 15 ½ including base; Weighs 19 pounds
