A rare and unusual Songye dance shield
Democratic Republic of Congo, of highly unusual and expressive form, the disk-like shield carved with three deeply grooved sections of repeating bands of red and white pigment, accented in black. Fine adzing to the reverse. Overall variegated fine surface.

Though highly enigmatic, it is likely that this dance shield was used in a context related to the Songye Bwada Ka Bifwebe cult which utilizes the iconic striated kifwebe mask.
