A fine Songye power figure
Democratic Republic of Congo, of powerful form, the large rounded head with face completely covered by hobnails; long neck and square angular shoulders, hands to the abdomen, thin legs bent at the knees, terminating in simple feet on an integral base. Difference in patination below the waist, implying that the figure had worn a skirt in its traditional context. Various attachments, fine overall dark patina.

    This piece appeared in a November 1995 Sotheby’s sale with a skirt covered in various attachments that were not original to the figure. Upon expert determination of this, the skirt was removed.
