Ivory Coast, an exceptionally carved anthropomorphic feast-spoon; the legs and buttocks carved with a delicate sensuality, the attenuated body and ladle perfectly balancing the composition. A lizard or crocodile carved in low relief to the reverse of the bowl. Dark lustrous patina from use and handling.

Spoons of this type, known as Wakemia, were given to elder women among the Dan of Liberia and Ivory Coast as insignia of their hospitality and tangible representation of their status. This example exceptionally balanced and beautifully patinated; attests to its traditional usage and care.
