Little Girl from Venezuela, c. 1940 inscribed and signed 'Rubin' (lower left) and titled on a label on the reverse oil on canvas 40 x 30in (101.6 x 76.2cm)
Provenance: Fanny Brice, Los Angeles, California Abner S. and Violet Greshler Trust
Note: According to Carmela Rubin, Director and Curator of the Rubin Museum, the sitter in this work is Ann, the daughter of Marco Cleja, a close friend of Rubin's. Cleja was a Roumanian residing in Paris, who escaped to Venezuela with his family before the war, hence the title of the portrait. It is believed that Rubin painted the portrait in New York sometime around 1940. He also painted another portrait of Ann with a teddy bear as well as portraits of her parents. Ann Cleja herself lives in France today.
We would like to thank Carmela Rubin for authenticating and providing the information for this work.
