Footnotes

  • The clipper ship Golden Gate was built in the New York yard of Jacob A. Westervelt. On her maiden voyage, beginning October 13, 1851, she sailed under the command of Captain Truman from New York to San Francisco in a passage of 115 days. Four years later, while put into Pernambuco en route to Bombay, she burned to the water's edge. The second officer was suspected of having set the fire.
