  The above portrait of a West African women is typical of Stern's portraits from the mid 1950s; the extensive and daring use of colour is combined with her bold painterly technique. The degree of resemblance in these portraits is controlled by Stern's interest in the language of form and it is the process rather than the model that is the focus.
