    The above work belongs to a series of works from the 1960s in which Stern was preoccupied with pictorial themes relating to the workers on land and sea. Stern herself described them as containing:

    “field workers, grape harvesters and fishermen – people who occupy themselves with everlasting things, timeless”

    The January tomato harvest was an important time of year as it represented a major crop for the farmers and as such would have fascinated Stern. A watercolour sketch of the same title and similar subject was made in 1961.
