Camelthorn tree, Kalahari signed 'J.H. Pierneef' and dated '56' l.l. oil on canvas 45.5 x 61 cm. (18 x 24 in.)
Trees and especially the Acacia erioloba or cameltorn were central to Pierneef's compositions and his typical use of flat planes, lines and colour to present harmony and order in nature are eloquently expressed in the above work.
Pierneef expressed a wish which defined the source of his inspiration: Bury me under a camelthorn tree, with its straight manly character guarding me, and its roots deep in the soil of Africa.
