Footnotes

  • As a result of government contracts during the war, Chris Craft faced the post-war years in a strong financial position and felt optimistic about the powerboat market. They opened additional runabout production plants in Chattanooga and Caruthersville in 1947, consolidating their market leadership with the demise of their main rivals. The 17ft runabout was the most popular of the new production run, the hull being based on the 17ft pre-war Special Runabout, simpler and more economical to produce than the barrel-back, which was last made in 1942. When production finally ceased in 1950, 1,880 examples had been built.

Built by the Chris Craft Corporation, probably at Caruthersville, Missouri in 1947, hull no. 1564, of mahogany, with seam battened sides and diagonal bottom. The hull is bright varnished to the waterline, with a white boot top and epoxy coated below with copper-coat antifouling.

Decks are of varnished laid mahogany planking, with soft radiused covering boards and white seam infill, the stem, gunwales and quarters protected by chrome strip mouldings. Fittings include original Chris Craft streamlined lights, ventilators and rubber tread pads. There are twin cockpits, upholstered in red vinyl, each seating three people, the forward cockpit with wheel steering to starboard and vee windshield.

The long aft deck of laid planks is fitted with a split chrome edged hatch to the engine compartment, for access to the 90hp Gray Marine six cylinder petrol engine, fitted with twin Zenith carburettors. This unit is capable of driving the vessel at 40 knots.

The engine has been completely overhauled with new bearings, pistons and valves and has run for less than ten hours since works were completed. The boat has also been fitted with a new bronze propeller and cutlass bearing.

Shipped to New York in 1948, “Rana” was exported to South Africa, returning to the UK in 1990, since when she has only been used on fresh water.
