Footnotes

  • The trousers included in this lot were worn by Patrick Troughton and featured in the publicity photographs for the episode "The Three Doctors", used on the front cover of the Radio Times in 1973. The remainder of this costume was used for exhibition and promotional purposes only and did not feature on the television series.
Patrick Troughton was the second actor to portray Doctor Who and played him between November 1966 to June 1969.
The producers and writers behind the programme wanted the Doctor's second incarnation to be in direct contrast to William Hartnell's 'Victorian Headmaster' depiction of the character. Therefore, Troughton was unveiled as, in his words, the "Cosmic Hobo", an eccentric exemplified by his unusual combination of garments, and in particular his long hair coat.
