watercolours on paper watermarked J Whatman 1827, the subjects comprising 21 pages depicting birds, 1 of a butterfly alighting on a flower, 15 of butterflies, 11 of reptiles and insects, including lizards and scorpions, and 2 of bats, some pages with numbering in top-right corner, contemporary calf, blind-stamped with gilt frieze around edges, cartouche on front cover with F. W. Faber, 1831 and India on spine

    Private US collection.

    It is unclear whether the F. W. Faber of the cover inscription is the Church of England clergyman and Roman Catholic convert (1814-1863) of that name: the date would make him a very young man who had not yet left university.
