Footnotes

  • The palace to the far right of the composition of the present painting is the Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi. It was originally built by Andrea Loredan, from the influential Venetian family that provided Venice with three doges. In the late 16th Century, when the family ran into financial troubles, the building was sold to the Duke of Brunswick and two years later became the property of William III, Marquis of Mantua, who in turn sold it to Vittore Calergi. The palace was much extended and improved by Calergi in the early 17th Century, to designs by the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. The palace remained in the Calergi family until inherited by their relatives, the Vendramin family, giving the palace its current name. Later owners included the Duchess Maria Carolina of Berry, niece of Emperor Leopold II, and the Dukes of Grazia, who leased the palace to the composer Richard Wagner who lived there from 1882 until his death there in 1883. It is now used as the winter venue for the city casino.
