Britain’s best-known and longest-surviving bicycle maker, Raleigh also manufactured motorcycles from 1899 to 1905 and from 1919 to 1933. More recently, the Nottingham company offered a range of mopeds plus a scooter in the late 1950s/1960s. A typical example of a vintage single-cylinder Raleigh, the Model 14 was manufactured between 1925 and 1927 and was powered by a 248cc single-cylinder sidevalve engine driving via a three-speed Sturmey-Archer gearbox. ‘MO 5983’ has enjoyed a mere three owners from new and was last on the road in 1938 when it was placed in barn storage, remaining there, untouched, until 2003. The machine was purchased by the current owner at Bonhams’ Stafford Sale on 16th October 2005 (Lot 314). Sold strictly as viewed, this potentially most rewarding restoration project comes with assorted documentation dating from the 1930s including driving licence, insurance papers and old-style continuation logbook.
