Lot Details
FITZGERALD, F. SCOTT. 1896-1940.
Tender is the Night. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. Decorations by Edward Shenton. 8vo. Original green cloth, spine gilt-lettered. Some age-toning within, a little insect wear to spine, some wear to tips, slight lean.

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Harry Joe Brown—late of the 17th Infantry Brigade. Wounded in Hollywood 1920-1940. —from his fellow doughboy / F Scott Fitzgerald / Encino, 1939." Also with the bookplate of Harry Joe Brown.
In the fall of 1939, Fitzgerald was living in Encino in a rented cottage on the estate of actor Edward Everett Horton, MGM having declined to renew his contract for the year. He records a meeting with the producer Harry Joe Brown in a letter to the Berg-Allenberg Agency: "Somewhere around this time [September 1939] Harry Joe Brown called me over to Twentieth Century Fox on a Sonja Heine picture but it was apparently only for a day's pumping" (2/23/1940, in, Bruccoli, A Life in Letters). Fitzgerald is listed as an uncredited writer for Everything Happens at Night, produced by Brown and starring Heine.
