Lot Details
A Brian Jones group of handwritten letters and a signed magazine, 1965, 1966
All sent to a young fan named Martha during the heady heyday of the Rolling Stones; the first letter is penned on a single sheet of white paper in blue ballpoint ink and reads in part "Yes, I remember meeting Terry, / and he did stay with me for a / while, but I don't know where / he is now. I think he went / back to America, I'm not sure;" included is its original transmittal envelope with a postmark of "London / 21 VII '65;" the second is almost identical to the first and reads in part "Thank you nuts for / your nice letter. (I don't mean you / are nuts, it's just an expression I use!;" included is its original transmittal envelope postmarked "London / 27 4 '66;" the third penned in blue ballpoint ink on lined notepaper and reads in part "Yes, the tour of America / was really a big success for us and / we are really grateful to everyone of you;" included is its original transmittal envelope with a postmark of "London / 24 11 '66." Accompanying the letters is a small fan magazine titled "The Rolling Stones Book" with a headshot of Brian Jones on page 19 that he signed in blue ballpoint ink "Love/Brian Jones."

Footnotes

  • This collection was consigned by the same "Martha" who Brian Jones sent all the letters to forty-plus years ago. The "Terry" that Jones mentions in the first letter was disc jockey Terry Knight, who had a popular radio show on CKLW in Windsor, Ontario, just across the border from Detroit. Martha and her girlfriend talked their way into Knight's radio station one day, and picked the DJ's brain for information about the Stones as Knight had accompanied the band on their first U.S. tour (as well as lived with Jones in London for a short while). Martha got Jones' address from Knight, and started this short correspondence with the rock star before he got too big to personally answer fan mail like this.
