An Elvis Presley partially used personal checkbook, 1971-1972
Consisting of four unused checks (numbers 1146 to 1149) from the King's personal checking account that he had at the National Bank of Commerce in Memphis, Tennessee; printed with his information in upper left corner reading "E.A. Presley / 3764 Highway 51 South / Memphis, Tennessee 38116" [Graceland's address]; still attached are four blank deposit slips with same printed info as well as twenty check stubs with thirteen having handwritten notes on them indicating what the checks were for; dated from October 1971 to April 1972 and all penned in blue ballpoint ink (in three different hands, though not Presley's), some of Elvis's expenses included $4,000 for "Expenses" on November 11, 1971, $432 for "Nevada Airlines / Charter Flight to L.A." on March 19, 1972, $1,000 for "Cash / Personal Expenses for E.P." on March 20, 1972, and $150 for "Dept. of Motor Vehicles / Regst. of Dune buggy / and penalty" on April 24, 1972; overall, a brief, though fascinating, look into Presley's daily expenses for a six-month span.

Footnotes

  • This checkbook was directly consigned by Sonny West, Elvis' longtime friend, bodyguard, and inner-circle member. Sonny says that this particular checking account of Presley's always had a minimum balance of $1,000,000 in it at all times because Elvis liked the idea of being able to write out a personal check for that amount which the recipient could cash right away. Sonny also relays that Presley himself rarely wrote out the checks, but would have his trusted buddies do it (such as Sonny himself whose writing appears in the stub portion). Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed by Sonny West, discussing this piece.
