A Marilyn Monroe set of handwritten notes about "The Prince and the Showgirl," 1957
Three pages of yellow lined notebook paper filled with Monroe's detailed pencilled notations about this troubled production that was shot in London with Sir Laurence Olivier. On the first page, Monroe writes lines of dialogue as well as her suggestions about technical details such as "clapperboard shot is missing after this / where is it / holding on Elsie reaction [her character's name, Elsie Marina] / too long reaction of him turning leaving theater;" on second page, Monroe continues on with production notes such as "all takes / want to see / hair is / like wheat / or corn / scream sooner / I want to see all takes of love scene /...close up of me should be longer / than is / walk up stairs to see queen is not / the best we have / I want another take of Nicky and me in / garden;" on third page Monroe writes just one line of text "take out close up in garden." Sadly, this film was not well received by either the public or the critics when it was released in June of 1957. Monroe famously criticized its production and gave the director, Laurence Olivier, and the producers constructive criticism on how to make it better. In hindsight, numerous film historians now think that this film could have been salvaged had Monroe's input been taken seriously. These three pages of Monroe's notes certainly indicate that she took the project seriously, especially since it was her company, Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc., that was producing the film. The notes also show Monroe as a thorough and thoughtful actress who analyzed her craft as well as the craft of her fellow filmmakers (i.e., the director, the writers, etc.)
