Footnotes

  • An opaque twist 'King of Prussia' wine glass, of slightly later date, was sold by Christies, 26th November, 1991 lot 126. Another air twist example was in the Seton Veitch Collection, see Delomosne exhibition catalogue, 2006, no 32. Both of these glasses have different style portraits to the one depicted on this lot, which is reminiscent in its treatment of some Prince Charles Edward Stuart's portraits on Jacobite toasting glasses. The King of Prussia, Frederick the Great (1712-86) was a cousin of George II (his mother was George's sister), and was an ally of Britain during the Seven Years War (1756-63). He was particularly celebrated as a popular hero following his victory for the allied forces at the Battle of Rosebach in 1757. His portrait is more commonly found on porcelain, but is extremely rare on glass.
