An important pair of Meissen bottle vases
circa 1720
Of square section after Japanese Kakiemon originals, painted in Holland in bright transparent enamels and gold with, on alternate sides, a coiled dragon and a pair of phoenixes forming a circular design, the necks with a further flying phoenix alternating with a dragon with a curious serpent's tail, 19.7cm high (one vase with restoration to rim chips, some minor flaking to the enamels); sold together with a pair of later ormolu bases made to fit these bottles (2)

  • Provenance: the Brigadier J M Neilson Collection. Exhibited in the British Museum 'Porcelain for Palaces' exhibition, 1990, fig. 267. These were shown alongside a Chinese rouleau vase painted in Holland by the same hand with a very similar dragon and phoenix, see the British Museum catalogue, fig 268. This Chinese vase is also illustrated by Helen Espir, European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, fig. 12, page 81.
