Footnotes

  • This bowl is typical of a known group of silver vessels, whose size rarely exceeds 15cm. diameter, the majority of which have a flattened base and a raised central boss. Close comparison can be drawn with a group of bowls in the Hungarian National Museum, Budapest, that were found in the Southern part of Hungary, near the border with Serbia. The hoarde was discovered in agricultural land and was probably buried by its owner during the 1552 invasion (Suleyman The Magnificent and His Age, exhibition catalogue, Budapest, 7th September 1994 - 8th January 1995, nos. 68-74).

Vessels from this group share a similar composition of a central rosette or floral-filled raised roundel, sometimes with a pin, and a cavetto filled with radiating, slanting petals; ring-matting can be found on the background of floral designs. The present lot depicts stylised lotus flower heads, also found on Chinese and Persian wares of the 15th and 16th Centuries.

Like the preceding lot, a parcel-gilt silver bowl depicting animals, this particular type was also copied by the potters of Iznik in the late 16th Century. Two dishes with the same radiating floral design can be seen in the Musee national de la Renaissance - Chateau d'Ecouen (Frederic Hitzel and Mireille Jacotin, Iznik, L'Aventure D'Une Collection, Paris, 2005, p. 234, nos. 338 and 339).
