This dish is a fine example of Iznik pottery manufacture, which draws its inspiration from 15th Century Chinese Ming blue and white porcelain.

Following Sultan Selim's conquests of Tabriz in 1514, and of Damascus and Cairo in 1517, large quantities of Chinese porcelain and celadons were acquired to adorn the court's rooms. Iznik potters, therefore had access to a wide variety of designs, which had not been available to them before. Amongst the most popular were the 'lotus spray' and 'grape' designs.

This particular dish with its meandering 'lotus spray' motif, may have taken its design from a 15th Century Ming dish housed in the Topkapi Museum, see, R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Catalogue, Vol. II, 1986, p. 417, no. 597. Visually both dishes share the same floral sprays in the cavetto, the same rimless sides, the central floral motif and the double concentric line. The only differences on the Iznik dish, are the added narrow zig-zag and dotted band around the rim, as well as the bolder depiction of the floral motif, underlining the creativity of the Iznik potters.
