Baazi was the directorial debut of legendary film maker Guru Dutt and the first major commercial hit for the acclaimed actor Dev Anand. The film was produced as a result of a promise made between the star of the film Dev Anand and director Guru Dutt that when either was in a position to do so they would aid the career of the other. In this case Anand's production company Navketan hired Dutt as director for his debut.
Since his untimely death in 1964, Dutt's films have developed a cult following, representing the "Golden Age" of Indian cinema.
