US$ 820 - 1,300

Lot Details
A prop cactus from Monty Python's Flying Circus,
as featured in the "Scott of the Sahara" sketch,
the cactus formed of three polystyrene grooved fronds, on a plywood stand and frame, approximately 10ft tall.

Footnotes

  • The cactus is being sold to raise funds for a new unit at Torbay Hospital, Devon.
This particular cactus featured in the sketch which first introduced the actress Carol Cleevland to the Monty Python audience. She has been dubbed by some the seventh Python for her involvement in not only their television series but films and stage shows. After this initial role Cleevland appeared in two thirds of the Python episodes in various risque roles as "object of desire" or "blond bombshell" type characters.
The Scott of the Sahara sketch featured Carol Cleeveland's bra being caught on the cactus, as she ran away from the camera. Michael Palin has said this cactus was Carol's "undoing".
With regard to this charity sale John Cleese has been quoted as saying:
"I am very excited to think that the cactus that ripped off Carol Cleveland's bra is now available for purchase. This is truly a collectors item, and I am sure you'll be able to persuade Carol to sign it. I'd put in an offer myself, but I already have three of them. I can't think of a better cause, too, than raising funds for the new hospital wing"
