Footnotes

  • Born in Helsinki in 1935, Bjorn Weckström graduated from the Finnish Goldsmith’s school at the age of 16. From the early 1960s, Weckström took inspiration for his jewellery designs from nuggets of gold that he found in Lapland. Weckström exhibited his work in the 1961 exhibition “The International Exhibition of Modern Jewelry” in London. His pieces sold well, and on his return to Finland he became popular for his new approach to jewellery design. It was at this time that Pekka Antilla employed Weckström as the new designer for his company, Lapponia, for which Weckström is still designing jewellery today.

Throughout his career, Weckström has exhibited around the world, and won numerous competitions and prizes. One particular highlight during the 1970s was when one of Weckstoms necklaces named "Planetary Valleys", was personally chosen by George Lucas to be worn by Princess Leia in Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope.

However, it is the “Flowering Wall” necklace that truly gave Weckström international recognition. In 1965 he wanted to go abroad to establish his designs elsewhere. He entered a competition in Rio in which over 2000 items from around the world were submitted. The standards were very high. Weckström was awarded first prize for his design of the “Flowering Wall”, and overnight he gained international acclaim and recognition.
