Footnotes

  • Accompanied by Sah's handwritten note stating 'made for the Festival of Britain, 9ct, the first gold I could get after the war'.

The 1951 Festival of Britain aimed to raise the nation's spirits after the hardships endured during the Second World War. At the time, much of London was still in ruins and the exhibition attempted to give a feeling of recovery and progress by promoting British art, design and industry. The nucleus of the Festival was on the South Bank Site but it was celebrated in cities and towns all over Britain. The Labour Deputy Leader, Herbert Morrison, described it as "a tonic for the nation".
