A mabé cultured pearl, coral and diamond bird brooch, by Sterlé, circa 1960
The stylised bird of paradise, with mabé cultured pearl body, textured head and wings, and long articulated tassel tail, decorated with brilliant and single-cut diamonds, perched on a coral branch, signed Sterlé Paris, numbered, maker's marks, French assay marks, length 10.1cm.

Footnotes

  • The bird was a popular and recurrant motif in jewels of the 1950s and 60s and Pierre Sterlé developed his own highly individual interpretation. His stylised birds with engraved golden plumage are often offset by supple chains that "flutter" when worn.
Cf: Tennenbaum & Zapata, The Jewelled Menagerie, Thames and Hudson, London, 2001, pp 123-4, 132-5, for illustrated examples of Sterlé's bird creations.
