Footnotes

  • Born in 1942, Jacqueline Mina studied jewellery at Hornsey and Royal Colleges of Art, London. Winner of the 2000 Jerwood Prize for Jewellery, Mina is one of the UK’s leading contemporary goldsmiths. Sources of inspiration for Mina’s work include early Cycladic sculpture (2800-2200 BC) and post war British art and design.

Mina’s method of working is built on her extensive knowledge of the technical aspects of goldsmithing. Her technical accomplishments and ability to work with the noble metals are outstanding. Mina is renowned for successfully exploring the technical possibilities of fusion between gold and platinum, of which this necklace is a fine example. Employing platinum gauze, mesh, distressed fragments, tesserae, wire and gold dust to create a variety of surfaces from which she creates an array of beautiful contemporary jewellery. ”I am preoccupied with the surfaces of precious metals and with form – juxtaposing the play of light, reflection, lustre with characteristic expressions of angle, curve and line.“ – Jacqueline Mina

Mina works both for exhibitions and to commission. Her jewellery has been exhibited worldwide including galleries in the UK, Germany, Belgium, France, Japan and the USA. In 2004/5, Mina was invited to curate the ‘Orgold’ exhibition in Notting Hill, London; an exhibition of imaginative and contemporary work in gold.

Contemporary jewellery is rapidly increasing in popularity, with a significant rise in global interest. Competition and increased interest leads to high retail prices. It is therefore an exciting opportunity for such a fine example of contemporary jewellery to be sold at auction.
