An art nouveau gold, enamel, sapphire and diamond brooch/pendant, by Gautrait, circa 1900
The triangular plaque depicting an enamel thistle and cornflower with rose-cut diamond leaves against a plique-à-jour enamel landscape, with a brilliant-cut diamond surmount and suspending a pear-shaped mixed-cut sapphire drop, engraved to the reverse, signed L Gautrait, detachable brooch fitting, length 7.3cm.

Footnotes

  • There are few records of fact regarding Gautrait. Even his first name is uncertain as he was often referred to as Lucien but sometimes as Leopold. Vever documents him as translating the designs of Leon Gariod into first class enamels. Certainly, the thistle appears to be one his most enduring motifs.
