'The Camp at the South Pole', gelatin silver print, laid on original mount, Fine Art Society label on verso, lettered "D" in ink, image 305 x 380mm., 1912

  • The image shows Lawrence Oates, Henry Bowers, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Edward Wilson, and Edgar Evans - all of whom died in their attempt to reach the Pole. "It was felt that a selection of the photographs taken...at the South Pole must be included, as they are without doubt the most tragically interesting in existence" (Fine Art Society catalogue of Ponting's exhibition 'The British Antarctic Expedition 1910-1913').
