Footnotes

  • A fine collection of scarce almanacks from the Library of the noted bibliographer Eustace F. Bosanquet, with fascinating contemporary notes. Several of the almanacks are recorded in the present copy only.

Bosanquet describes the volume fully in article in The Library, volume xviii, pages 50-55: "...the most interesting thing connected with this volume is the notes made by the original owner at the beginning and end. He was evidently a moneylender and a very rich man... the amounts he had out on loan on 27 October 1597, evidently about the day he bought the book... amount to a very large sum of £21,110 and several celebrated people's names are in the list".

The list of debtors apparently includes Arabella Stuart (daughter of Charles Stuart, Earl of Lennox, "The La: Arbe --- 4000-0-0"), her grandmother the famous 'Bess of Hardwick' (Elizabeth Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury, "My La: Shrew --- 700-0-0"), and about whom there is a a longer note on another leaf, Sir Henry Billingsley (Lord Mayor of London and the translator of the first English edition of Euclid, "All: Billingsley --- 300-0-0"), and "My Sisters --- 5000-0-". See illustration at page 61.
