Magna Carta, Statutes and Charters to the end of the reign of Richard II, in Latin and law French, manuscript on vellum, 339 leaves (including 4 blanks at front and 2 at rear), wanting one leaf at opening of text (with first item of index) and probably 7 leaves of text (partially supplied in fifteenth century manuscript on 2 added leaves), signatures and catchwords (the latter often on calligraphic scrolls), neat cursive bookhand throughout in brown ink, 30-33 lines per page, paragraph marks in red and blue, 3 pages with illuminated bar borders, burnished gold and colours, one with historiated initial depicting a king, the other 2 with decorative initials, the borders rubbed with minor loss of pigment and gold, twentieth century brown morocco by Gray of Cambridge, earlier endpapers preserved, one with eighteenth century commentary on contents, another with old spine label preserved, 4to (215 x 135mm.), [England, last decade of the fourteenth century with later additions]

Footnotes

  • A fine early English legal manuscript, in all likelihood made in London in or soon after 1392 (the date to which the predominant hand is found), with additions to 1399 presumably made very shortly after the death of Richard II. There are numerous early annotations and corrections to the latter portion of the book.

Text: ff. 1-50 Index with 131 headings (wants first leaf); 51-2 blank; 53-162 Magna Carta and later charters and statutes (including Carta de Foresta, Statute of Gloucester, Articuli super cartas, De correctionibus per prelates faciendos, De inquisitionibus capiendis, Statute of Exeter, Expositio vocabulorum, Compositio monete et mensuram etc); 163-263 Statutes of Edward III (1327-1377); 264 blank; 265-333 Statutes of Richard II (1377-1399), the statutes of part of 10 Richard II and most of 11 Richard II wanting (probably 7 leaves missing), part of the missing portion supplied in a slightly later hand on 2 inserted leaves. Statutes of the end of 16 Richard II (1392) in the same hand as the majority of the manuscript, thereafter the text (on 14 leaves) in a slightly later hand. See illustration at page 54.
