Footnotes

  • Palliere was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1823 to French parents. In his youth he studied under the painter F. E. Picot in Paris, and in the 1850s he returned to South America where he spent a decade travelling through Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia. It was whilst on these travels that he created the images found in this volume, detailing a variety of native peoples, costumes, customs and topography. See illustration on preceding page.
