  • John Beale (1608-1683), a clergyman, was a native of Herefordshire where his father was an early exponent of cider orchards at his estate at Yarkhill. In 1656 Beale entered into correspondence with Samuel Hartlib. Two of the letters relating to orchards in Herefordshire where printed in this tract, "which reputedly gained his native county some £100,000 within a few years" (ODNB). Beale became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663, and in 1664 his Aphorisms Concerning Cider was printed in John Evelyn's Sylva.
