Footnotes
Note: This work is from a series of sculptures produced after the artist moved into a church in Benicia where there was a large hive of bees in the walls. After several months of trying to co-exist with the bees, Neri called an exterminator. Unfortunately the bees could not be removed and when Neri returned to the church, dead bees were everywhere. His response was to do a series of bee sculptures and a sketchbook of ink and collage drawings. The catalog Manuel Neri - Early Work 1953-1978 (page 137) features reproductions of the sketchbook and an image of a 'Dead Bee' sculpture.
