A large Canosan pottery volute krater
Early 3rd Century B.C.
The volute handles with moulded Medusa mask terminals on one side and plain discs on the reverse, decorated overall with white slip embellished with red outlining, and pink, white and blue details, the neck painted with a female head flanked by scrolling flowering foliage, the reverse ornamented with a large palmette amongst scrolls, the body decorated with opposed equestrian warriors in combat, the horses with their forelegs raised, the naked riders with their cloaks flapping behind them, holding spears, flanked by large palmettes beneath the handles, the reverse, painted with the head of a lady of fashion in profile, her hair dressed with a kekryphalos, the scenes bordered with blue tongues around the shoulder, wave-pattern below the groundline, and meander under the rim, the body pierced at the base leading to the hollow foot, 20½in (52cm) high, repaired and restored
