Anne Redpath, OBE RSA ARA LLD ARWS ROI RBA (British, 1895-1965)
'Tulips and lilies' signed, bears inscription verso, oil on panel, 61 x 51cm (24 x 20 1/16in). In artist's original decorated frame
Provenance : Acquired directly from the artist by her friend, a Cupar school teacher, and by descent. Note : Painted in the late 1930's, this oil is typical of Redpath's classic works of the period. The simple, stylised forms of flowers and jug are rendered in pale pastel shades : here, the vivid scarlet of the tulip heads is characteristically tempered by a wash of white. Shape and pattern are balanced with areas of suggested, flattened space, while passages of impasto play off the thinner ground and arc of the tabletop. Dabs of vivid yellow and red lift the whole composition without losing the subtlety which typifies this series.
