  • After winning nine good races as a two year old, in 1882 Dutch Oven won the Yorkshire Oaks and was strongly fancied for the St Leger, when she would be up against Geheimniss, the winner of the Oaks. In between times, Dutch Oven ran very poorly in another race, with the result that she went to 66 to 1 for the St Leger and Geheimniss became hot favourite. Fred Archer even tried to persuade Lord Falmouth, the horse's owner to allow him to swap horses to the favourite, but to no avail. Both jockey and owner, as well as the betting public who had stuck to their last must have been delighted when Dutch Oven came in the winner at 40/1.
