Portrait of a young girl in a shawl signed (lower left) oil on canvas 65 x 49 cm. (25 1/2 x 19 1/4 in.)
Provenance: Private collection, London.
The young sitter in the offered lot would appear to be the same young girl who is featured in portraits in the Bashkirian State M. V. Nesterov Museum of Arts, Ufa and the State Museum of Art, Perm; see also a portrait sold in these rooms on 31 May, 2007, The Russian Sale, lot 43. The plump lips, heart-shaped face and large almond-shaped eyes create a beguiling expression of innocence and girlhood. The artist has focused on the face and hands of the small child, rendering her shawl with an impressionistic brush, further to emphasise the beauty of the girl wrapped in peasant clothing.
