Grigory Ivanovich Gurkin was born in the Altai Republic in 1870 and was known there for his artistic talent; indeed, the composer Andrei Viktorovich Anokhin observed his skill and it was only a matter of time before the painter came to the attention of Ivan Ivanovich Shiskin. Shishkin took a liking to the young artist and used his influence to keep his star in the ascendant.
