Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    Formerly in the collection of the Kohl family, San Francisco;
    Private collection, San Francisco.

    The famous miniaturist spent a large part of his life away from his native Ukraine, in France and Belgium. Switzerland, however, was the country where Pokhitonov began his public career. Together with his mother and his ailing sister, he travelled to Switzerland in 1871 where he exhibited a small number of works in Geneva. The offered lot is a later depiction of a landscape which will almost certainly have been familiar to the artist.
