Edward Frederick Brewtnall, RWS, RBA (British, 1846-1902)
When love was young signed and dated 'E Brewtnall 78' (lower right) watercolour heightened with white and with scratching out 78 x 112 cm. (28 x 44 in.)
Exhibited: London, Royal Watercolour Society, no. 159, Summer Exhibition of 1878.
The work bears a label on the verso which reads:
'When love was young and men were strong, And maids believed them true, A shepherd came with pretty song, Unto a maid to woo.
EF Brewtnall 1 The Mall Park Road Kaverstock HIll N.W.'
Brewtnall often compsed his own songs and poems, and 1902 he composed a poem for Sir Ernest Waterlow, the President of the Royal Watercolour Society. It is likely that Brewtnall also composed the figures depicted on the reverse of the present lot.
