Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    with Henry J. Mullen, Ltd., Harrogate;
    Private collection, UK.

    An interesting early work, the present lot shows the artist still adhering in technique to Ruskin-esque principles, following a close observation of nature. During this period, the artist is experimenting with various media, using combinations of oils, watercolour, gouache and gum arabic. In the present lot we see -as Bromfield and Robinson comment in their notes on the catalogue for the 1979 Leeds City Art gallery exhibition of the artist's work- how Grimshaw 'seems to use oil paint as if it were watercolour, floating onto canvas "washes" of paint which seem to stand out from the surface' 1.

    A watercolour of Barden Tower, also painted in 1867, was sold with Christie's, June 11th, 1993, lot 87. A similar composition, painted in 1868, was sold with Christie's, June 16th, 2005, lot 47.
