Footnotes

  • Painted c. 1877.

An indispensable element in the elaboration of his plastic language, complimentary to other techniques and types of artistic expressions used by the artist, watercolor is an important part of his work. From the simple study to the more elaborate landscapes, what is striking is his will to focus on the essentials. In this lot, the Port of Ostende, Pantazis focuses to the center of the composition; he heightens with gouache the boats and certain buildings, giving the work a structure and a material quality close to his oil studies.

Saleroom notices
