Footnotes

  • Simeon Solomon was born in London and receieved his artistic training at the Royal Academy where he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) and Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898). His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1858 and 1872. In 1871 Solomon was arrested for indecent behavior and was deserted by his family and artistic contacts. He was forced to spend much of his time in St Giles's Workhouse, Holborn, where he produced large amounts of drawings and pastels of biblical and mythological figures in order to bring in an income.
