Footnotes

  • The blue paper used in the present lot indicates that the study dates from between 1855 and 1877. It is likely that the study was made in 1864 because the figure on the left is very similar to the figure of Helen in Helen of Troy (1865, private collection). The composition on the right relates to a Leighton study sold by the Maas Gallery, and is an early study for Elijah in the Wilderness (1877-78) in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

    The studio stamp 'LLC' relates to the Lord Leighton Collection and was put on all drawings which remained in Leighton's studio at Leighton House at the time of his death. The encircled letter and number 'J6' on the verso is a reference number from the Fine Art Society who sold Leighton's drawings in c. 1897.

    Provenance:
    Leighton Collection;
    The Fine Art Society;
    Private Collection.
