With 41.3 cm. barrels retained by a figured-of-eight iron ring at the muzzles and with baluster release-catch in front of the trigger-guard, one barrel struck on the underside with Maastricht 'CMLC' mark, the breech-plates engraved with bands of stylised foliage, lightly engraved tangs retained from beneath by a single screw, slender bevelled back-action locks cut in low relief with differing designs of interlaced tendrils bearing buds and flower-heads inhabited by a winged putto, the forward sections signed 'Vandensande / Te Zutphen' on a ribbon supported at one end by a monster-head, the flat cocks in the form of a marine monster and retained internally, faceted pans and steels, moulded slender figured walnut full stocks carved in relief with acanthus foliage and with a raised panel at the barrel tang, fluted fore-ends each carved with a horn-inlaid monster-head at the ramrod-entry, shaped flat copper side-plates each with applied silver panel engraved with a serpent and a naked figured wrestling with a monster, plain iron trigger-guards, ebony pommels each carved as a dog's head in the round, with horn teeth, mother-of-pearl eyes, and silver collar pierced and engraved en suite with the locks, one set over a brass band (the other an old replacement), two short engraved iron ramrod-pipes, and later wooden ramrods (2)

    The maker (originally from Doetinchem) became burgher and member of the Gunmakers' Guild of Zutphen in 1650. He was appointed Master of the Guild in 1668/9 and 1677/8. In 1679 he lived in the Korte Hofstraat, and he had four sons, two of whom followed him in the gunmaking profession
